CAUTHE 2020 Auckland, New Zealand

This was the 30th annual conference of CAUTHE, the association for teaching hospitality, tourism and events in Australasia. 220 papers were presented over three days attracting 280 delegates (it would have been over 300 without the Corona virus which prevented some from travelling) to Auckland University of Technology in New Zealand, who were the hosts. StendenHMS were represented by John Hornby and Erwin Losekoot who presented 4 papers and posters between them. John took part in PhD student activities on the first day and Erwin led a session for PhD students on qualitative research methods together with Dr Warren Goodsir of AUT. He also participated in a PhD mentoring session with Prof Elizabeth Robert of Southern Cross University and chaired a session on 'Technology and the visitor experience'.  We enjoyed the Powhiri, the traditional Maori welcome ceremony. The opening keynote was by Prof Alison Phipps, the UNESCO Chair of Refugee Studies at the University of Glasgow, a passionate call to all those in our field to consider the plight of refugees and the current atmosphere of 'inhospitable hospitality'. Other keynotes were by John Barrett on Maori tourism on Kapiti Island and by Prof Iis Tussyadiah of the University of Surrey on technology and 'Shaping the future of travel and tourism'. We also enjoyed 'The Great Debate' which was between teams from Australia and New Zealand with the topic "New Zealand is regularly left off world maps - is there any point in it even being there". The debate created much heat and little light. 

As always, CAUTHE also presented plenty of opportunities for networking and a number of delegates said they would be keen to write papers for 'Research in Hospitality Management' journal. Several people also asked if they could spend some of their sabbatical at SHMS which would bring senior academics to Leeuwarden for collaboration on research.
