Report visit 2019 Nordic Symposium in Roskilde Denmark
  • publication: 13 November 2019

From 23 to 26 October I visited the 29th Nordic Symposium in Roskilde, Denmark.

Together with our PT master students Harald Hovenkamp and Nicole Turnhout- Ammerlaan I presented two papers. Harald Hovenkamp is owner of Michelin-star restaurant Kaatje bij de Sluis. He recently completed his MA thesis on Hostmanship in Hospitals. Nicole Turnhout- Ammerlaan is General Manager Crowne Plaza Amsterdam-South and regional manager of IHG. Together with Natascha Wienen she wrote an MA thesis on Employer branding of international chain hotels in the Netherlands. Both presentations were very well received and generated good discussions.

A highlight was the keynote by Szilvia Gyimóthy on the sharing economy. It was impressive to hear her present her vast knowledge of the topic and inspiring ideas on studying specific phenomena.

But the biggest success was for our colleagues Sarah Seidel and Femke Vrenegoor. Sarah attended her first Nordic Symposium five years ago with a presentation on sustainability. Two years later, together with Femke, she proposed and hosted a whole session on sustainability with five presentations. Last year there were so many proposals that they hosted two sessions and this year there were three sessions on sustainability with fifteen presentations. Sarah and Femke really put sustainability on the map at the Nordic Symposium. In 2021 there will be a special edition of the Scandinavian Journal of Hospitality and Tourism, all thanks to these two colleagues!
